Colombo: Graeme Swann took 6 wickets in the second innings to lead England to an emphatic win in the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka at P Sara Oval in Colombo on Saturday to level the series 1-1. The victory ensured that England kept their No. 1 Test spot intact.

Here are the details of how the match unfolded on Day 5:

19.4: England defeated Sri Lanka by 8 wickets to draw the 2-match series 1-1. England were 97/2.

Alastair Cook remained unbeaten on 49 while Kevin Pietersen was not out on 42.

9.1 overs: Trott out!!

Herath removed Jonathan Trott for 5 to keep Sri Lankan hopes alive for an upset. England 31/2, still needed 63 runs to win the Test.

0.6 overs: Strauss out in the very first over for a duck!!

Dramatic start to England’s chase for staying at No. 1. They lost skipper Andrew Strauss in the first over of the innings bowled by Dilshan. England 0/1.

118.5 overs: Sri Lanka all out for 278!!

Angelo Mathews became the last wicket to fall for Sri Lanka as Steve Finn sent him for 46. The hosts take a lead of 93 runs. England needed 94 runs to win the Test and draw the 2-match Test series 1-1.

The win would also help them to hold on to their No.1 Test spot.

108.2 overs: Herath out!!

103.5 overs: Prasanna Jayawardene departed!!

Swann took his wicket No. 6 as he removed the wicketkeeper Jayawardene for just 2. With this wicket he brightened England’s chance of winning the Test. Sri Lanka 242/8.

101.5 overs: Mahela Jayawardene out!!

Sri Lanka’s chance of saving the Test almost ended when Swann picked up Mahela for a fighting 64. Five-wicket haul for Swann. Sri Lanka 238/7.

91.1 overs: Swann started the Day 5 proceedings for England while Mahela Jayawardene and Angelo Mathews resumed batting for the hosts. Lanka 218-6, just 33 runs ahead.

Earlier, on Day 4, off-spinner Graeme Swann grabbed four wickets to leave a rejuvenated England on the brink of a series-levelling win in the second and final Test against Sri Lanka on Thursday.


Sri Lanka, trailing by 185 runs on the first innings, ended the fourth day`s play at 218-6 in their second knock, a lead of 33 runs with only four wickets in hand on a wearing P Sara Oval pitch.

Skipper Mahela Jayawardene stood in England`s way with an unbeaten 55, showing the form that has already fetched him two centuries in the series, including one in the first innings.
